Film peer assessment

25/02/16

Speedrun by Daniel Milsom

I guess I liked the tracking and over the shoulder shots, because respectively it follows the character throughout the film and I liked seeing the letter left to Ryan. In my opinion, the audio was too quiet with the exception of background noise. No dialogue can be heard, but then again, not all short films have to have speaking. The music was a little too dramatic for something that nobody knows of what is going to happen. If I were to do this differently, I would try to change the establishing shot, because it was too slow. I would make the hooded guy come out unexpectedly instead of him appearing out of thin air and slowly walking towards Ryan. I can give Ryan a lightning quick reaction to the hooded guy. Overall change to the film, is try to show a bit of plot. The genre must possibly be action-thriller like The Bourne Identity, but I'm not really sure.

Unknown Caller by Aaron Chandler

I particularly liked the opening of the film  -the panning shot of old buildings in Bath and the dramatic music worked well together. The audio was dominated by the dramatic music - there was no other sound. I would not have used dramatic music for the entire film - some different music or periods of silence or background noise would have varied the tone more. I think there are elements of thriller and mystery, partly because of the final scene in which the 3 characters stare at each other but nothing is said - there is an air of menace but also of mystery. The opening shot was a panning shot; the medium shot where he takes the phone call was effective, and the medium shot of the protagonist meeting the caller and his assistant was also effective.

Final blogpost of the Term

16/12/15

What you enjoyed about the project and what you didn’t
I guess I enjoyed doing the editing, but I did not enjoy of how poorly planned the film was.

Identify 3 - 5 areas that you could improve on next time
  1. Write down a plan
  2. Always check the equipment
  3. Try to give this film a bit more sense
  4. Think about the white balance a little more
3 Things you liked and justify why
I like the editing, because I get to have fun with the sounds and effects.
I got to have a part in the film, because I would love to be a rogue character.
Talking to some of the locals, because it gives me the sense that we are aloud to film in certain places.

Also write about how you feel you have improved over the course of this term…
I think I have gradually improved, because now I believe I know how to use other Adobe programs a lot better.
Blog your storyboards, scripts, treatment and focus groups.

Wacom test

25/02/16

I basically just used the brush tool roughly outline the pencil lines with a Wacom tablet. It was very difficult though, as the tablet had no screen on it for to visually see if I'm going off the lines.

I progressed with Arashi and tried to give him a bit of colour. Using the pencil and paint bucket tool.

What is concept art?

25/02/16

I already knew that concept art is visual way of showing a basic idea of a character, object or location. They mostly comprise of rough sketches.

This a piece of concept art for Blackwall from Dragon Age Inquisition.

I read the 'Just what is concept art?' article and I know now that concept and illustration are not the same, concept art only give a rough idea that is part of a process, while illustrations give completed ideas. Concept art can be shown to the leader of a production group, primarily a producer. I can help with the concept artists in deciding which design to go for or to have a few ideas mashed together.

The purpose of concept art is mainly to obtain funding, but to ensure visual continuity across production team. It is part of a process, that is a NOT finished product.

My film

10/02/16

Pre-Production

Link to previous ideas

Originally I was planned to first make an epic fantasy movie, but the idea was turned down, then I tried out a western movie idea, but that too got turned down as well, (see link) so I got stuck with an idea according to a brief. I always wanted to do a western movie, just because I like the genre in general.

I guess I enjoyed choosing the name Niles from Frasier as my character's name. I suppose I also enjoyed writing the script.

I had no actors, because of the so-called "audition", it was just Performing Art students doing theirs acts without receiving any judgements from us, as of that I had no one to play my characters on the first day of shooting. Instead I chose some volunteers from my team, Simon as Niles and Malcolm as someone who was league with the caller. Another challenge was the equipment, we didn't check whether the recorder had any working batteries and a memory card, the camera was packed with so much data it just stops in the middle of recording. The weather was also a challenge when it started raining. Props were really hard to come by, they had to be bought out my money.

Production

I shot my film over the course of three days (5th to 7th January). There was Simon, Paige, Will, Megan and Malcolm, originally Anouska was in our team, but we found out she moved out of the course. We filmed it in Bath, because there was no where else to go. Luckily we found a phone booth near the college, because the assignment brief said our films have to feature phone calls and I could not find any other phone booth anywhere in Bath.

We had some challenges filming, because of buses getting in the way of the opening scene, the wind blocking out the sound, and people walking in front of the camera and talking loudly. I have learnt about the challenges of filming in a city, the abbey was especially challenging due to the fact that the abbey square was full of people and I couldn't be able to get a full shot of the abbey.

Will and Meg helped out with the sound, but Paige was chosen at the last minute to voice the unknown caller. I used a range of shots, such as Wide Shots and Tracking Shots. There were somethings I was pleased with, but there were also some things that I did not, for example, Simon didn't look anything like Niles Crane, but I like the music I chose for the opening scene: The Wanderer by Dion. I initially chose Better Together by Jack Johnson, but after watching the Fallout 4 trailer, I decided I shall go for Dion, because it seems like much better walking music and it makes an ironic contrast between the lyrics and the character of Niles, I could hardly imagine Niles being a wanderer doing the things that the character in the song does. If I could change anything about the acting is when Simon says his line "Alright!" he sounded nervous instead of frustrated.

Post Production

I used Adobe Premiere to do the editing process. I needed to fit the footage into the right sequence chronologically. The main type of special effect I used was fire when Niles confronts a dragon. I got it all from FootageCrate. I downloaded them into my file and into Premiere. The font was something I wasn't particularly concerned about, but I was fine with it. In terms of sound effects, I added a roar to suggest the presence of a dragon, I got the sounds from Youtube and Freesound. I changed the caller's voice to make it sound like she's on the other side of the phone.

The editing process was more difficult than I anticipated because the dialogue could not be heard properly, such as the phone box scene. In addition I used both Paige's dialogue and Simon's dialogue and spliced them both together. But there was also a clicking sound between the dialogue, Tobie showed me to use some transitions to make Paige's lines fade in and out of Simon's. I managed to get rid of the clicking noises, but I still could not hear Simon's words, so I tried another solution which was to re-shoot the scene and re-record the scene. Then I need to sync up with the separate files.

I learnt to use the sound after my Assassin's Creed project. I could not be able to get any proper sound for the final ending for the film, because the wind was interfering with Malcolm's dialogue. From the Interview with a Guitarist task, I learned about using the 5-shot method, reducing sound distortion and white balance. I used a variety of shots in the task which I have learned about before. I learned about put the right shots in a particular pattern in the Making of Rice Paper Crepes task.

Moodboard

Before A Knight for A Call, I thought of making a western film called 'Dead Man's Hell'. It's about a newly recruited deputy of the town Dead Man's Hell, who is now after a very dangerous and 'fiery' outlaw. Then I found out that the brief required a phone and an envelope, hearing this made me feel cheesed off, but I was able to develop another idea meeting to the brief.

Audience Researcher

The audience researcher supports producers and assistant producers by finding out information on the target audience of shows in production, based upon what they like or don't like. When getting a audience researcher must categorize his results

Junior Model Maker

Ideally have a degree. With craftsmanship, combined with artistic ability. To be able to work without supervision and follow a brief. He must listen to the senior model maker.
